Azerbaijan will be represented at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest with a song written by Arash, an Iranian-born singer and songwriter living in Sweden.
According to a decision of an expert jury approved in mid-January, 19-year old singer Aysel will perform the song at the Second Semi-Final of Eurovision, to take place in Moscow on May 14.
In order to find the right song for her, an open call was issued to both national and foreign song writers to submit proposals. The national broadcaster Ictimai (Public) TV received a total of 30 songs, which a seven-member jury had to evaluate. In the end, they unanimously voted in favor of Always, a song written by Arash.
According to the Eurovision 2009 website, Arash learned about the contest through Azerbaijan online and finished writing the song overnight, which had long been in the making.
In a recent interview, Arash confessed that he was a fan of the Eurovision contest and he would have loved to perform on stage himself.
"I would love to represent Azerbaijan on stage, not behind the stage," he said.
His song, Always, was described by one of the jury members as romantic and perfectly suited both to Eurovision and Aysel`s personal style.
"I have written this song specifically for Aysel. Having seen her picture online, I realized that she is the one who should sing this song," the artist said.
"I participated in the open call because my family originally come from Azerbaijan. So I wanted to contribute to this country`s going down in Eurovision history."
Arash expressed confidence that the song he had composed would win the majority of votes at Eurovision.
Arash released his first album in 2005, which went gold in several European countries. He has created such smash hits as Pure Love, Donya and Boro Boro.
The last Eurovision contest was held in Serbia on May 24, 2008 and won by Russian star Dima Bilan. According to the rules, this year`s contest is being hosted by Russia.
