Azerbaijan, TeliaSonera mull issues of mobile communications sector

Ali Abbasov, Azerbaijan`s Minister of Communications and High Technologies has met a delegation from TeliaSonera Group of Companies.

The sides discussed issues related to the development of the mobile communications sector in Azerbaijan, including technical issues existing in this area as well as the directions of Azerbaijan’s future cooperation with TeliaSonera, AzerTag state news agency reported.

Kjell Lindstrom, Vice-President and Head of Group Public Affairs at TeliaSonera highlighted the company’s activity in Azerbaijan, Azercell Telecom’s achievements in the mobile communications sector, including the company’s services, implementation of 3G and 4G new generation telecommunication technologies and other innovations.

Noting the growing need for Internet and innovations in the mobile communications sector, Minister Abbasov said in this context, it is very important to further improve the quality of mobile services, expand the application of new services, provide remote residential areas with LTE technologies offered by Azercell to provide customers with convenient and effective communication services.

The mobile communications sector will also be responsible for ensuring high quality communication services during the Baku 2015 First European Olympic Games.

The meeting also discussed proposals on additional measures for further expansion of Azercell Telecom’s activity in Azerbaijan, as well as continuation of work on the implementation and organization of innovative technologies and efficient services.

Azercell Telecom LLC was founded in 1996 and since the first years sustains a leading position on the market. Azercell introduced number of technological innovations in Azerbaijan: GSM technology, GPRS/EDGE, 24/7 Customer Care, full-time operating Azercell Express offices, mobile e-service 'ASAN imza' (ASAN signature) and others. With 51 percent share of Azerbaijan's mobile market Azercell's network covers 99.8 percent of the country's population.

The number of Azercell's subscribers reached 4.5 million people by late 2013. In 2011 Azercell deployed 3G and in 2012 the fourth generation network - LTE in Azerbaijan. The company is the leader of Azerbaijan's mobile communication industry and the biggest investor in the non-oil sector. Azercell is the part of the TeliaSonera Group of Companies, which has subsidiaries in 17 countries with total number of 186 million subscribers and 27,000 employees.
