Germany faces daily hybrid warfare attacks originating from abroad, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has warned, following a suspected attempt to target Leipzig/Halle Airport with an explosive-laden drone.

Dobrindt told Bild am Sonntag that foreign powers were seeking to weaken Germany politically and socially by spreading fear, according to AzerNEWS, citing the official newspaper.

“We are confronted with hybrid warfare every day,” Dobrindt was quoted as saying, warning that hostile actors were seeking to undermine Germany through methods designed to create uncertainty and fear.

The comments followed a suspected attack attempt involving a drone carrying explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport, raising concerns over the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to unmanned aerial systems.

According to Bild, the German government plans to strengthen the country’s capabilities to detect and counter drones in response to the growing threat.

The proposed measures would form part of wider efforts to protect critical infrastructure and counter what German authorities describe as an increasingly complex hybrid threat environment.

The incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport comes amid growing European concerns over the use of drones and other covert methods as tools of potential sabotage and intimidation.
