By Nigar Orujova

A common terminology collection of the Turkic languages will be created, it was announced on November 15.

The news was announced by Deputy Chairman of the Terminology Commission under Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences ANAS Sayali Sadigova.

The common terminology collection will cover various fields such as technology, computer science, and others, Sadigova said.

"Works on creation of a common technological terms glossary are already underway. The first volume of this glossary will be published in 2013, and the second volume will be published in 2014," Sadigova said.

According to her, the creation of a computer science terminology glossary will commence after the completion of the technical terminology glossary.

Following the creation of this terminology, common terms will be used in Turkic speaking countries.

Sadigova said most of the Turkic languages borrow terms from the English language now. Some 90 percent of the words created today in both Azerbaijan and other Turkic speaking countries are terms . So terminology issues should be discussed in order to develop the language.

It is necessary to define ways of appropriating terms that enter the Azerbaijani language, she said.

"Many terms of Arabic and Persian origin entered our language at one time," Sadigova said.

According to her, these words in Azerbaijani don't denote the original meanings that they had in Arabic and Persian.

"Defining the future development of the language is first of all connected to terms. Thus, this problem is being discussed not only in Azerbaijan, but also in all Turkic speaking countries, and works are underway in this sphere," Sadigova said.

Common textbooks in some fields, primarily Turkic literature and history, is also planned to be published in Turkic states in order to raise awareness of the common heritage of Turkic nations.

The Turkic languages are spoken over a large geographical area in Europe and Asia. It is spoken in the Azeri, the Turkmen, the Tatar, the Uzbek, the Baskurti, the Nogay, the Kyrgyz, the Kazakh, the Yakuti, the Cuvas, and Turkey dialects.

Turkic-speaking countries are also successfully implementing a program on the creation of a single Turkic language with unified textbooks on history, geography and literature of Turkic-speaking countries for the entire Turkic world.

Sadigova went on to say that all terminology dictionaries in Azerbaijan can be printed after receiving appropriate recommendations from the Terminology Commission of the Cabinet of Ministers.

According to Sadigova, the Commission gives permission for printing the terminology dictionaries in the country after their development by research and scientific institutions. Before issuing such permission, the dictionaries will be widely discussed by experts.

"We want to ensure that regardless of the people who have prepared the dictionaries, all the terminological dictionaries will be published through the Commission after being discussed in the Commission," she said.

According to her, the publishing houses of the ANAS and the Cabinet of Ministers can be used for publishing these dictionaries.
