Israel party opposes parliament debate on Armenian ‘genocide’

Head of Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Work with the Diaspora,
Nazim Ibrahimov, on Wednesday discussed with a senior Israeli
lawmaker the issue of discussing the alleged Ottoman-era genocide
of Armenians in the Knesset, the State Committee said.
The Israeli MP, Chairman of the Knesset Committee on Foreign
Relations, who represents Israel Our Home nationalist party, Robert
Ilatov, said: "I have repeatedly stated the position of the Israel
Our Home Party, which strongly opposes any attempts to revise
history. Knesset is not an international court on human rights and
has no rights - either legal or moral - to pass decisions on this
issue. Therefore, our unequivocal position is to remove the issue
from discussion altogether."
The Israeli lawmakers have approved -- with a 12-8 vote --
discussing the "genocide" issue in one of the Knesset committees.
The motion, initiated by MP Haim Oron of Meretz, along with his
party, was supported by representatives of the Avoda party and
ethnic Arab MPs.
According to historians, from 1915 to 1923, Armenians had begun an
uprising. They had taken up arms against Turkey and assisted
Russia, one of Turkey’s enemies in WWI. To counter these actions,
the Ottoman Empire decided to resettle the Armenians. However, the
latter claim that their predecessors were subjected to genocide in
the process, while Ankara rejects the allegations and has offered
to research the events through a joint commission of
historians.*
