European Games contribute to Azerbaijan’s modernization,  Chess Federation

The realization of large-scale projects in Azerbaijan, such as the inauguralEuropean Games, clearly demonstrates country growing power, Vice President of Azerbaijan Chess Mahir Mammadov told Trend on May 22.

He said the successful organization of such sports events increases the authority of Azerbaijan on international arena.

“The implementation of such projects clearly demonstrates the growing strength and importance of Azerbaijan. Such events contribute to the country’s modernization,” Mammadov said.

He also expressed confidence that the Baku 2015 European Games will be held at an adequate level.

“The preparation, which is impressive and unprecedented for its scope, is being carried out,” he said, adding “It is desirable that our athletes perform very successfully.”

Baku 2015 is the first ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
