European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is interested in expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan, Head of the CERN Department of International Relations, Wolf Rudiger Voss said on September 1.

Voss made the remark at a meeting with Azerbaijan's Communications and High Technologies Minister Ali Abbasov in Baku, the Ministry reports.

During the meeting, the parties discussed prospects for cooperation in training highly qualified personnel and conducting joint researches.

Abbasov introduced reforms carried out in Azerbaijan for the development of high technologies, including activities and plans of National Nuclear Research Center established under the Ministry to use nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes.

Today nuclear technologies are used in industry, agriculture, medicine and other areas, Abbasov said, adding that Azerbaijan has potential stockpiles of nuclear materials, as well as relevant experience in the field of nuclear technologies.

For his part, Voss said the center has 21 members and is cooperating with many countries including Azerbaijan.

At present, the cooperation with CERN is being carried out via the Institute of Physics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

The processing capacities of the DATA-center of the Physics Institute are used to process the data flow of the CERN.

Aside from processing the data flow of the CERN, the usage of the Azerbaijani segment allows the institute to use the resources of the participating countries for the solution of time-consuming tasks, in particular in geological studies to identify energy resources, in medicine, and other areas.
