Four Azerbaijani boxers are set to finish their career, Secretary General of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation Naghi Safarov told local media.
After the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Albert Salimov, Lorenzo Sotomayor, Abdulgadir Abdullayev and Magomedrasul Majidov decided to retire from sports.
Throughout their sports career, the national athletes had always shown great results and made their country proud.
Albert Selimov is the winner of the European Games held in Baku. He is also known for winning the European Amateur Boxing Championships in 2006 and 2010 as well as the 2007 AIBA World Boxing Championships.
Olympic silver medalist, Lorenzo Sotomayor is an Azerbaijani boxer of Cuban origin. He competed in the men's light welterweight event at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
In 2014, he became the champion of Azerbaijan, while in 2015- the winner of the first European Games.
For his great achievements at the championship and the contribution to the development of sport in Azerbaijan, Lorenzo was awarded the Order of Shohret (Glory).
Abdulkadir Abdullayev, Azerbaijani heavyweight boxer won a gold medal at the European Games and a bronze at the world championships.
Like Lorenzo, he was awarded the Order of Shohret (Glory).
Bronze medalist of the London 2012, Magomedrasul Majidov is a Dagestani Russian competing for Azerbaijan. The boxer became World Champion in 2011 at Super Heavyweight in Baku and World Champion in 2013 at Super Heavyweight in Almaty.
At the 2012 Olympics (results) he stopped Meji Mwamba and European champion Magomed Omarov from Russia 17:14 and looked on his way to beat defending champion Roberto Cammarelle, he was leading 8:6 after the first round but the Italian fought back to win 13:12 and Majidov won bronze.
