Lithuania plans to dig trenches and establish new military counter-mobility measures along its borders with Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad region, AzerNEWS reports, citing the Lithuanian government’s press service.

The project was prepared by Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence, with €50 million allocated for its implementation.

The Lithuanian government approved proposals to expand existing counter-mobility measures and introduce new ones aimed at making it more difficult for a potential adversary to enter and move through Lithuanian territory.

"Military counter-mobility is an important part of Lithuania’s defence preparedness. We seek to make the best possible use of Lithuania’s terrain and engineering measures to impede an adversary’s movement if necessary and create more favorable conditions for our armed forces to operate," Lithuanian Deputy Minister of National Defence Tomas Mikelkevičius said.

Under the government’s decision, Lithuania will establish new areas equipped with military counter-mobility engineering measures. Along the border with Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad region, a 20-meter-wide strip of land will be formed, while in operational areas identified by the Lithuanian Armed Forces, such strips could reach 150 meters in width. The measure is scheduled to be implemented by the end of 2028.

This initiative is expected to be completed by the end of 2030.

The number of military counter-mobility engineering parks will also be increased to 50 locations, with the expanded program scheduled for completion by December 31, 2028.

The government also plans to modify measures related to the restoration of drainage ditches and regulated waterways as part of the broader counter-mobility program.
