Azerbaijan, Australia: potential for political, economic co-op

Speaker of Azerbaijani Parliament Ogtay Asadov has met a delegation of Australian parliamentarians.

Asadov said such visits would contribute to developing inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries.

He hailed more than 23 years diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Australia, adding there are wider opportunities for developing political and economic cooperation.

The speaker said: “Your visit is on the eve of the first European Games. You will get familiarized with Baku. I am confident you will return with pleasant impressions”.

Asadov highlighted Azerbaijan’s rapid economic development.

Azerbaijan has all conditions for investment, he said. Expressing the importance of further expansion of economic relations, the Speaker underlined that mutual visits and business forums will be beneficial in terms of developing ties between the two countries.

Touching upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Asadov noted that as a result of the conflict, 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory was occupied by Armenian armed forces, more than one million Azerbaijanis have become refugees in their own country. Azerbaijan wants to solve the conflict by peaceful means, he added.

Member of Australian Parliament Luke Simpkins lauded the development processes in Azerbaijan.

Expressing his gratitude for the hospitality, Simpkins stressed confidence in further developing relations between the two countries.
