Azerbaijan has developed a new control and management system of new generation which will increase profitability of the country's oil wells, director of the institute Telman Aliyev told Baku-based Trend news agency on December 12.

The Institute of Cybernetics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has developed the system, applying Robust Noise Monitoring (RNM) technology, Aliyev added.

He said this system has already been launched in 35 facilities of Bibiheybat oil and gas production department, 190 facilities of Shirvan oil as well as one facility of Balakhany oil and gas production department. Currently, the system is being tested.

Oil workers are satisfied with the new system. The theory and technology of the control and management system was developed by Azerbaijani scientists, Aliyev said.

He went on to note that the efficiency of this system has been approved. The control and management system created in the Institute of Cybernetics on the basis of modern technologies creates the opportunities to identify the dynamometer cards, to save electric power by over 50 percent, as well as to double the profitability.

Recently ANAS has announced that it works on new methods for increasing oil recovery at Azerbaijan's fields.

Azerbaijan is one of the world's oldest producing countries and has played a significant role in the development of today's oil industry. Traditionally the country has been a prolific oil producer, but Azerbaijan's importance as a natural gas supplier will grow in the future as field development and export infrastructure expands.

The country's largest hydrocarbon basins are located offshore in the Caspian Sea, particularly the Azeri Chirag Guneshli (ACG) field. Similar to its share of total production, ACG also holds the vast majority of Azerbaijan's total reserves, with approximately 5 billion barrels located in this field.

Azerbaijan's proven crude oil reserves were estimated at 7 billion barrels in January 2013. The country was among the 20 largest exporters of oil in the world in 2012.

Azerbaijan produces three grades of crude oil, the SOCAR-produced barrels, Azeri BTC, and Azeri Light.
