Ambassador: Iranian court will make fair decision on two detained Azerbaijanis

Iranian judicial system will make a fair decision regarding two Azerbaijani citizens detained in Tabriz, Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pakayin told Trend news agency on May 15.

Azerbaijani citizens - research fellow of the Institute of Literature named after Nizami Ganjavi of the National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Orientalist Khalida Khalid and her assistant Shamkhal Huseynov were detained in Iran by the country's law enforcement bodies in Tabriz on April 30, Iranian media outlets reported earlier.

Azerbaijani Consulate General in Tabriz immediately delivered two notes to the Iranian foreign ministry in connection with detention of Azerbaijani citizens.

Ambassador Pakayin said that Khalida Khalid visited Iran as a tourist and was arrested for illegal actions. But her detention will not adversely affect the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Iranian embassy in Azerbaijan asked the relevant agencies of the country to rapidly consider the case with the Azerbaijani citizens' detention.

According to the last reports of the Iranian side, Khalida Khalid and Shamhal Huseynov are now in the custody of the Iranian Intelligence and Security Service (ETTELAAT), and their case is being investigated.

Baku seeks detailed explanation from Iran on the detention of Azerbaijani citizens in this country, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev told Trend earlier.

"The Iranian side accused our citizens of illegal actions, without specifying what actions exactly," Abdullayev said.
