Azerbaijan attracts new ferry for TITR

By Nigar Abbasova

Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company has launched another ferry on Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR).

The company involved “Agdam” ferry in transportation operations on the route, which is created to provide transport connections between the East and West of Eurasia.

The ferry started sailing operations following repair work at Zikh Shipyard. “Agdam” is planned to be used on Baku-Turkmensbashi-Baku and Baku-Aktau-Baku lines.

Currently, Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company has 13 ferries, two of which are Ro-Ro type ferries. Seven of those ferries can carry up to 28 cars, while other six ferries can carry 52-54 cars

Azerbaijan is highly prioritizing the development of the shipping industry and improvement of the maritime infrastructure. The government has already approved the State Program on Development of Shipping in Azerbaijan for 2016-2020.

The TITR runs through China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and then to Europe via Turkey and Ukraine. About 300,000-400,000 containers are expected to be transported via the Trans-Caspian international transport route by 2020, bringing huge financial profits to Azerbaijan.
