The first ever Sharjah Masters International Chess Championship has wrapped up in the UAE.

The tournament brought together more than 190 players from 38 countries. Among them was 80 grandmasters.

Azerbaijani GM Elmar Magerramov took the second place at the international chess tournament, sport.day.az reported.

Before the last round, Elmar Magerramov and Vladimir Akopanov were among the leaders of the tournament, scoring 7 points.

Further, Azerbaijani GM played a draw and finished the competition with 7.5 points as three other chess players.

The organizers had to calculate additional indicators and named him second. UAE`s Saleh Salem celebrated the victory at the tournament.

In 1992, Magerramov became the first chess grandmaster in the history of Azerbaijan.

Along with his playing career, Elmar had an extensive coaching career as well. He has been National Team Coach of Tunis, coached Garry Kasparov during 1984 World Chess Championship and Maia Chiburdanidze during 1991 Women's Chess World Championship.

Magerramov is currently living in the UAE. His main hobbies apart from chess are mathematics and music.
