Carbamide plant to appear in Turkmenistan

By Nigar Abbasova

Turkmenistan is currently engaged in realizing the project on construction of ammonia and carbamide (urea) fertilizer production plant.

The capacity of the plant will be 1,155 million tons of chemical fertilizer per year. The plant will be located in the town of Garabogaz, Balkan province.

The engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning operations will be implemented by the consortium comprised of the Japan Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and Turkish Gap Inşaat Company.

MC and MHI are responsible for the design, manufacture, procurement and commissioning of the plant, while GAP is responsible for the construction, as well as the detail engineering.

Construction works for the new fertilizer plant was launched in August 2014 and the facility is scheduled to start operations in June 2018. The total investment in the project is estimated to be at the level of $1.3 billion.

Technologies of the Danish Haldor Topse AS are expected to be used in the production. The technologies will allow manufacturing of approximately 2,000 tons of ammonium hydrate which is considered to be one of the most essential raw materials for the production of carbamide, on a daily basis.

Carbamide is considered to be in high demand in the global market. The plant is expected to use natural gas, the reserves of which ranks Turkmenistan among top four countries in the world as a raw material.

Construction of the new facility in the town of Garabogaz, located on the shores of the Caspian Sea is expected to enable the country to export its products to the world markets more efficiently and make a significant contribution to development of the domestic chemical industry.
