A member of the national Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany believes Georgia could become a crucial player in ensuring the stability of Germany’s energy security.

Charles Huber said the Southern Gas Corridor was a project with immense potential for the wider European area. "Georgia has been implementing successful political transformation since the country regained independence and now is a confident partner in the international arena,” Huber said.

The Southern Gas Corridor was an initiative of the European Commission to ensure a gas supply from the Caspian and Middle Eastern regions to Europe. The project envisages gas supply from Azerbaijan via the South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion, which will connect the Sangachal terminal with eastern Turkey through Georgia. It will link up with the SOCAR-led TANAP to be connected with a third pipeline TAP on the Turkish-Greek border

Huber said ensuring gas security was very important for Germany given the country's strong dependence on the import of gas. "This will certainly benefit German consumers as a major milestone for the diversification of our energy supplies,” he noted.

In the current geo-political conditions of Eastern Europe, this project is expected to reduce the dependency of the EU and Eastern European countries on Russian gas.
