Iran to launch its first destroyer in Caspian Sea
The home-made destroyer dubbed "Damavand" will join Iranian
naval fleet in the Caspian Sea during until the end of the current
Iranian fiscal year (started on March 21).
Iranian Army's 4th Naval Zone Admiral Khordad Hakimi said on Nov.27
that "among the Caspian Littoral countries, only Russia has
destroyers, and Iran's army should be always ready to tackle the
threats, Fars news agency reported.
Hakimi said the Caspian Sea's security depends on Iran and other
littoral countries' army forces.
The production of Damavand destroyer started in 2010, according to
the Iranian media outlets. When completed, it will have the ability
to carry helicopters, anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles,
torpedoes. The ship will also be equipped with electronic warfare
devices.
Iranian officials say that the country is upgrading its warfare
capabilities in the Caspian Sea in a bid to maintain peace and
security along its coastal waters in the North.
In March 2013 it was announced that Iran's
indigenously-manufactured "Jamaran 2" destroyer was launched in the
Caspian Sea near the northern port city of Bandar Anzali. Later,
Iran's state TV channel IRIB News released a report, which said
"Jamaran 2" and Damavand" is actually the same destroyer.
Damavand (Jamaran 2) is a wave-class warship, has been designed and
built by the experts at Iran’s Defense Ministry and has
state-of-the-art navigation equipment and complex defense
systems.
