Kazakh president seeks to strengthen fighting age discrimination
Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev proposed to develop
legislative mechanisms to fight age discrimination in the
country.
"We need to study the issue of introducing legislative mechanisms
for the protection of older people during employment and prevention
of other forms of age discrimination," Nazarbayev said at a
ceremony of awarding the winners of the Mereyli Otbasy National
Competition on September 19.
The president also reminded that the Kazakh legislation provides
responsibility of the children for the support of aged parents.
"If they are not around, they have to pay some alimony to keep the
elderly. How is this law implemented? It should be checked," the
president said.
Nazarbayev added that the state not only supports the elderly in
Kazakh retirement homes, but also pays pension to them. "However,
many children of these old men appear in retirement homes only on
the day when their parents receive pension," he said.
