Central Asian states consider restoring unified energy system

Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are planning to restore a unified energy system of Central Asia, bypassing Uzbekistan, local Tajik media quoted Head of Department on Restructure and Privatization of the Barki Tojik State Energy Holding Uyguloy Khojayeva as saying on June 17.

The single energy generating system was created to provide a stable and uninterrupted power supply to the countries of the region.

Tajikistan exports the excess electricity to neighboring Uzbekistan in the summer in return of flow of Uzbek electricity in the winter, when Tajikistan suffers from electricity shortage, Khojayeva added.

"After Tajikistan was disconnected from the unified energy system, it is difficult to calculate the economic damage caused by this. The industrial facilities do not get power for a half year. Repeated negotiations were unsuccessful," she stressed.

Khojayeva went on to say that currently, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan stand for restoring this system through the Tajikistan - Datka (Kyrgyzstan) - Shymkent (Kazakhstan) line, bypassing Uzbekistan.

"In this case, Tajikistan will have an opportunity to share electricity with the region countries, and export its excess over the summer," she noted.

Currently, Tajikistan exports electricity to Afghanistan in the volume of 800 million kW/h and to Kyrgyzstan in the volume of 600 million kW/h, in the summer period.
