Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that establishing the de-escalation zone in Idleb is difficult and complicated.

“Work is underway to solve this issue in the framework of Astana process and with the participation of the guarantor states as Russia, Iran and Turkey agreed on establishing this zone and also agreed on holding a tripartite meeting at the expert level at the end of this month or early next month, in preparation for the Astana meeting,” Lavrov said on August 21, voicing hope that the participating countries will support the outcomes of this meeting.

Syria has been suffering from the armed conflict since 2011. The conflict erupted between President Bashar al-Assad’s government along with its allies and forces opposing the government.

Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, hosted several rounds of Syrian talks since January 2017, which have resulted in a memorandum of understanding on creation of de-escalation zones in Syria.

Lavrov further pointed out that Egypt plays an important role in supporting the idea of establishing de-escalation zones in Syria.

“Russia and Egypt work actively to help with formation of a collective delegation from the Syrian opposition for talks with the government,” Lavrov said, adding that there is cooperation with others in this regard and the results of this work will be announced soon.

Turkish media earlier reported that Turkey, Russia and Iran, the three sponsor countries of the Astana process on Syrian conflict, may start a joint military operation in Syria.

Reportedly the joint military operation may begin in the Syrian city of Idlib. Russia and Iran are expected to begin operations in the southern part of Idlib, and Turkey will advance from the northern direction.
