European Parliament ratifies document ensuring Azerbaijan’s participation in EU programs

The European Parliament has ratified a document between Azerbaijan and the European Union ensuring Azerbaijan’s participation in the EU programs.
The plenary session of the European Parliament held a voting July 6 in Strasbourg on the document titled “Protocol to the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the European Communities and their Member States, of the one part, and the Republic of Azerbaijan, of the other part, on a Framework Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Azerbaijan on the general principles for the participation of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Union programmes.”
The document was approved with 577 votes in favor of it and 67 votes against it. Fifty-one people abstained to vote.
The objective of the Protocol is to lay down financial and technical rules enabling Azerbaijan to participate in certain European Union Programmes open to third countries. The specific terms and conditions for the participation of Azerbaijan in each particular programme will be then determined in agreement between the Commission and the competent authorities in Azerbaijan.
The gradual opening of certain Union programmes to the neighbourhood countries was outlined by the Commission already in 2006 and set as one of the components of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP).
