Azerbaijan ready to assist Sudan - minister

Azerbaijan is ready to assist Sudan through the Azerbaijan International Development Agency, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said in a meeting with incoming Sudanese ambassador Mohammad Al-Haq, the Foreign Ministry reported.

The Foreign Minister received the newly appointed Sudanese ambassador on September 9.

Mammadyarov congratulated al-Haq on his appointment as ambassador to Azerbaijan and wished success in his future activities.

Relations between Azerbaijan and Sudan and developments in Africa, as well as in the South Caucasus, were the focus of discussions during the meeting.

Earlier, in the beginning of September, Sudan has restored the activities of its embassy in Azerbaijan.

The Embassy spokesman held an introductory meeting at the Foreign Ministry of , where he discussed the development of bilateral relations.

Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Sudan were established February 16, 1993.

As a member of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Sudan opened its embassy in Azerbaijan as early as 1993. From 1993 to 1999 the Embassy of Sudan acted in Baku.

However, Sudan had to suspend the activity of its diplomatic mission in Baku in 1999 due to financial difficulties.
