Heydar Aliyev Center to host George Condo’s exhibition

Works by one of the most recognized modern avant-garde artists, George Condo, will be displayed at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku from June 16.

The exhibition will feature over 70 canvases and sculptures. The selections from a Private Collection exhibition shall run at the Heydar Aliyev Center till November 6.

Born in 1957 in Concord, New Hampshire, George Condo is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. Condo studied Art History and Music Theory at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell.

The artist, taking inspiration from American cartoon and the Greek mythology, delved into the portrait genre producing very specific gallows humor works.

Condo is known as a sculptor. His work "Desireah" crafted in 1999, adorned with ruby, diamond and pearls serves as a good example of great talent and creativity of artist.

A new phase of George Condo’s hybrid portraits began in 2007 when the artist started portraying series of sketches depicting the whole range of human sentiments varying from surprise to scream and smile.

Mr. Condo has been invited to lecture at many prestigious institutions including Columbia University, Yale University, Pasadena Art Center, San Francisco MOMA, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

His work is in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Judith Rothschild Foundation, Philadelphia, The Broad Art Foundation, Santa Monica,Tate Gallery, London, etc.

Currently, the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. is planning his drawings retrospective for 2017, and next year his work will be the feature of an exhibition at the Bergguen Museum, Berlin.
