Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has become familiarized with the infrastructure of the Panama Canal.

During an official Panama visit, Mammadyarov met with Francisco Miguez, the executive vice president of administration and finance at the Panama Canal Authority on October 6, Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry reported.

Miguez gave detailed information about the canal’s activities and its operation capabilities.

He discussed the further development of the Panama Canal, the increase of its throughput capacity and projects to create logistical support and service opportunities for ships that cross the canal as well as for their personnel.

Miguez noted that the Azerbaijani companies and investors could also participate in these projects.

Mammadyarov, for his part, noted that the transport sector remains one of the top priorities in the development strategy of Azerbaijan's non-oil sector.

He also spoke about the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, the newly built Baku International Sea Trade Port, the construction of land transport routes, the increasing capacity of cargo ship fleets and air transport, integrated transportation modules and the country's transformation into a regional transport hub.

Mammadyarov went on to say that cooperation between the two countries and the exchange of experience in this area might be useful.

The meeting also discussed the future development of the Panama Canal, the transportation of oil products through the channel and issues of mutual interest.

During his Panama visit, Mammadyarov met with Panamanian Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel de Sant Malo de Alvarado, Commerce and Industry Minister Nestor Gonzales and Ruben de Leon Sanchez, Panama’s National Assembly chairman.

Panamanian officials voiced their government’s interest in attracting Azerbaijani investors and appreciated Azerbaijan as a desirable partner for investments in Panama.
