Azerbaijan, Israel mull nuclear safety issues
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov has visited Israel to discuss topical issues of cooperation between the two countries as well as regional problems in the Middle East and South Caucasus, and nuclear security, Azertac reports.
During the visit, Azimov met with officials of Israel's Foreign Ministry, parliament and other government bodies. He highlighted the threats posed by Armenia to Azerbaijan and the region.
The Israeli side was informed about the fact that Armenia's Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant poses a threat to both Azerbaijan and the entire South Caucasus.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
