Novruz Mammadov criticizes Jagland’s decision

Novruz Mammadov, deputy head of Azerbaijani presidential administration, chief of the administration’s foreign relations department said that self-professed human rights ‘defender’ - Jagland - is a very ‘skillful diplomat’.

“His courage was limited to few statements on plight of migrants/refugees with all rights violated in Europe for many years,” he tweeted October 8. “Yet once a committee chairman, he didn’t miss opportunity to initiate awarding of Nobel Prize to newly elected president.”

“Apparently not in vain as he became council of Europe Secretary General,” he said. “Jagland evidently demonstrates infiniteness of ‘loyalty’ to certain quarters, with his immediate statements on Azerbaijan.”

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland, announced his decision to withdraw the participation of his representative in the joint working group on human rights issues in Azerbaijan on October 7

Jagland's statement was met with deep surprise and regret by the Azerbaijani members of the Joint Working Group.

"We, members of the Joint Working Group, believe that an intergovernmental organization, instead of running messages of certain circles, should have an objective approach to each and every Member-State, make correct assessment of the positive results achieved within the framework of cooperation, and support dialogue between the civil society and authorities," the group said.
