Armenian troops breach truce 34 times in 24 hours

The Armenian armed units shattered ceasefire with Azerbaijan a total of 34 times throughout the day using 60-82 mm mortar launchers, large-caliber machine guns and 122-mm howitzers, Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry reported on February 9.

The Armenian armed forces, stationed in Armenia`s Barekamavan village in Noyemberyan district, Berkaber village in Ijevan district, Aygepar, Chinari and Mosesgekh villages in Berd district and nameless hills in Krasnoselsk district subjected to fire the positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces located in Gaymagli and Giziljhajili villages in Gazakh district, Alibayli, Agbulag and Agdam villages in Tovuz district and nameless hills and Garavalli village in Gadabay district.

The ceasefire was also violated in Yusifjanli villages in Agdam district, Gorgan, Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages in Fuzuli district, Mehdili village in Jabrayil district, as well as nameless hills in Goranboy, Tartar, Khojavand and Fuzuli districts.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
