Alcohol abuse treatment centers to appear in Iran

Iran will open 150 alcohol abuse treatment centers by March 2016.

The centers will have special parameters, Alireza Norouzi, the health ministry’s Drug abuse Treatment and Prevention Office chief said, adding some educational courses should be held in the centers as part of the treatment.

Six of the centers will work as inpatient alcohol rehab center, Norouzi said, Iran’s ISNA news agency reported June 8.

Following the increase of alcohol use among Iranians, the country's health ministry issued licenses for private alcohol addiction treatment centers. In September 2013, a permit was issued for the establishment of Iran's first alcohol rehabilitation center in Tehran.

The first state-run alcohol abuse treatment center also was inaugurated in Tehran in 2014.

Alcohol use is prohibited according to the Iran's Islamic-based rules, so there is not detailed information about the number of the people addicted to alcohol in the country.

In February 2013, Iran's then Police Chief Esmaeil Ahmadi Moqaddam said that there are about 200,000 people in Iran who are addicted to alcohol.

In April 2013, Iran's Health Ministry issued a warning about the increase of alcohol use among young people in the country. The director-general of the Health Ministry's Mental Health Department, Abbas Ali Nasehi said that the problem of alcohol abuse would be the priority for the ministry.
