Emomali Rahmon re-elected Tajikistan's president

Tajikistan, one of the five Central Asian countries, held Presidential elections on November 6.

According to the country's Central Commission on elections and referendums, incumbent president of the country and candidate of the People's Democratic Party Emomali Rahmon won the election.

Rahmon, 61, who has been ruling Tajikistan for 21 years, got 3.23 million (83.6 percent) of the votes and won a fourth term in the office, being declared the elected president of the country.

The presidential elections in Tajikistan were held in a calm and stable atmosphere in accordance with the country's legislation and international norms.

According to the election commission, about 3,237,054 or 83.6 percent of Tajiks voted for the incumbent president.

The final results of the presidential elections will be announced after 10 days.

Meanwhile, preparations for the inauguration of the newly-elected president have started in the country's capital, Dushanbe.

This year the voting process took place at over 3,100 polling stations in the country and 60 polling stations outside the country.

Besides Rahmon, five more candidates were competing for the top job: Secretary of the Communist Party and Member of Parliament Ismoil Talbakov, chairman of the Democratic Party Saidjafar Ismonov, leader of the Socialist Party Abduhalim Gafforov, representative of the Agrarian Party Tolibbek Bukhoriev, and chairman of the Party of Economic Reform Olimjon Boboev.

The election process was observed by over 6,000 local and 500 international observers, including OSCE/ODIHR, OSCE Parliament Assembly, CIS, and Parliamentary Assembly of CIS and SCO.

The head of the OSCE/ODIHR observation mission said that no incidents were recorded by the mission yet.

According to Paraskiva Badesku, the voting process went smoothly.

Head of CIS observation mission and the executive secretary of CIS Sergey Lebedev said that the election was free and transparent and held in accordance with recognized democratic standards.
