Iranian president opens new gasoline production unit

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inaugurated the third gasoline production unit of Abadan refinery on Thursday, Trend news agency reported referring to IRNA agency.

The refinery's third unit will increase the country's gasoline production by 2 million liters per day.

Iran says that the new gasoline from this unit would meet Euro 4 and Euro 5 standards.

The third unit will increase the Abadan refinery's total gasoline output to 15 million liters per day.

Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi said on September 21, 2012, that Iran will boost its gasoline production capacity by 10 million liters in the near future.

According to his statements, once the third development phase of the Abadan Oil Refinery, the Lavan Refinery's gasoline production unit, and the RFCC unit of the Shazand Refinery come on stream, the country's clean gasoline output (Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards) will reach 25 million liters, from the current figure of 12 million.

The third phase of Abadan refinery came on stream at a cost of $3.5 billion.

The move is a part of Iran's efforts to reduce air pollution. Motor vehicles account for 70% of air pollution in the Iranian capital. Tehran says all carmakers would be obliged to manufacture cars meeting Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards.
