Armenian troops breach ceasefire with Azerbaijan

Over the past 24 hours, the Armenian military 72 times violated ceasefire on various parts of contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on June 5.

Armenian armed forces stationed in the Berkaber village of Armenia’s Ijevan district, opened fire on the Azerbaijani armed forces positions in the Gizilhajili village of Azerbaijan’s Gazakh district.

Armenians, stationed in the Chinari village of Armenia’s Berd district opened fire on the Azerbaijani positions in the Kokhanabi village of Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district.

Aside from that, Armenians from their positions on nameless heights in the Krasnoselsk district of Armenia opened fire at Azerbaijani positions on nameless heights in Azerbaijan’s Gadabay district.

Azerbaijani position also came under fire from Armenians stationed near the Talish, Gulustan villages of Goranboy district, Chayli, Chilyaburt, Goyarkh villages of Terter district, Shuraabad, Shikhlar, Yusifjanli, Javahirli, Sarijali villages of Aghdam district, Horadiz, Garakhanbeyli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages of Fizuli district and Mehdili village of Jabrail district.

Azerbaijani positions also came under fire from Armenians stationed on nameless heights in the Goranboy, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Jabrail districts.

The enemy was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
