PACE chief: OSCE Minsk Group does important work on Karabakh settlement

The OSCE Minsk Group brokering the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is conducting important work on the issue, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Jean-Claude Mignon said at the PACE winter session on Monday, Trend news agency reported.

He discussed his take on the meetings with the Azerbaijani and Armenian delegations.

Speaking of tripartite talks involving the Armenian and Azerbaijani delegations, the PACE president expressed his confidence that these meetings will help make a step forward in the conflict's resolution.

He added that all issues related to the conflict's settlement are being discussed at a tripartite meeting.

"I hope that parliamentary diplomacy will work," he said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
