Ankara positively assesses creation of a trilateral format of cooperation between Azerbaijan, Turkey and Russia.

Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ismail Alper Coskun made the remark while talking to Anadolu Agency on August 18.

He emphasized that Baku also strongly supports such a format of the trilateral cooperation.

"Turkey is interested in the purposeful development of relations between the neighboring countries and has been using the format of regional contacts based on mutual benefits”, said Cosgun.

The ambassador recalled that such cooperation schemes have been successfully applied in the Balkan region and the South Caucasus.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the framework of his St. Petersburg meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Azerbaijan, Turkey and Russia may form a trilateral cooperation mechanism. He emphasized that both Moscow and Ankara hold a very positive attitude to the proposed scheme.

The already existing trilateral formats, including Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey, Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan-Turkey, and Azerbaijan-Iran-Turkey, offer opportunities for regional cooperation and diplomatic resolution of regional issues. Among these, the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey format is the most functional, as the cooperation is supported by huge trade, energy and transportation projects.

Recently, there were talks over creation of new formats of trilateral cooperation such as Turkey-Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan and Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran. The latter cooperation format was thoroughly mulled during the August 8 meeting of Presidents Ilham Aliyev, Vladimir Putin and Hassan Rouhani.
