European Games, platform to exhibit Azerbaijan’s vitality

Holding the first European Games in Baku is a testament to how far Azerbaijan has come in its dynamic economic and social development since its independence, and the progressive success it has managed to maintain in multiple fields, making it the perfect choice to be the first venue to kick off the European Games, Palestinian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Nasser Abdul Kareem told Trend on May 13.
The diplomat said that he is very happy to see Azerbaijan, a young modern secular state, hosting this important event.
Holding European Games in Azerbaijan is a platform to exhibit the vitality of this country, he said.
“Azerbaijan has put a lot of effort to make this event a brilliant one, and I am sure it will manage to pull it off spectacularly, as we've experienced in previous occasions. I think we’re all excited and looking forward to watch the energy and versatility at the tournaments in different fields,” the ambassador said.
Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place on June 12-28, 2015.
There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.
Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
