Speaker: Holding European Olympic Games is Azerbaijan’s success
Holding the first European Olympic Games in Azerbaijan is due to the success of the Azerbaijani people and the outcome of policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev, speaker of the parliament Oqtay Asadov said at a plenary session on Tuesday, Trend news agency reported.
While Azerbaijan was putting forward the initiative of holding the Summer Olympic Games, it was stressed that the country has no experience in this field. The Organisation for European Games will demonstrate that the country is able to carry out such prestigious events, Asadov said.
Deputy Chairman of the ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan party Ali Ahmadov said that the first European Olympic Games in Baku testifies to Azerbaijan's growing authority in the world.
"Azerbaijan has become a venue for international events," he said.
A decision was made to hold the first European Games in Baku at the 41st General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee. The Games will be held in 2015.
The General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee voted by secret ballot with an overwhelming majority of 38 voting in favor, eight against and two abstaining, confirming Baku as the host city for the inaugural games in 2015.
