Ashgabat to host meeting on CIS borders

The Turkmen city of Ashgabat will host the 75th meeting of the CIS Border Troops Commanders’ Council April 21, 2016, according to the website of the CIS Executive Committee on February 22.

Ashgabat, referring to the status of permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan, recognized and supported by the UN, adopted a decision in 2005 to participate in the CIS structure as an associated member.

In 2012, Turkmenistan chaired the CIS and held nearly thirty events in this regard.

Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a regional international organization regulating relations between the states that were part of the USSR, was established on December 8, 1991.

On December 21, 1991, the leaders of eight former Soviet Republics – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan – signed the Alma-Ata Protocol, thus bringing the number of participating countries to 11.
