EBRD to support district heating system's modernization in Kyrgyzstan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Kyzylordateploelektrocentr has agreed to support the program of modernization of the district heating system in Kyrgyzstan's Kyzylorda city.

The program will be supported by the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) administered by EBRD under the district heating sector modernization framework, the bank reported on April 17.

The pre-financing agreement was signed by the EBRD's Director for Kazakhstan and akim of Kyzylorda Oblast during the third Investment Forum Baykonur.

The agreement sets a formal basis between the two parties to consider supporting a project.

EBRD's Director for Kazakhstan Janet Heckman said this modernization program is essential for the many people of Kyzylorda who will get more reliable heating thanks to individual heating substations in many buildings.

The EBRD and CTF are considering a total loan of up to 4.3 billion tenge ($23.5 million) to Kyzylordateploelektrocentr, a municipal heat and electricity supply service provide in Kyzylorda.

The modernization program will make heating stations, transmission and distribution networks more energy efficient and as a result cut harmful emissions into the atmosphere. It will also install individual heating substations to increase the efficiency and reliability of the system at the buildings level.

Since the start of its operations in Kyrgyzstan, the EBRD has invested approximately $630 million in about 110 projects across different sectors of the Kyrgyz economy.
