Georgia announces final results of presidential elections

By Nazrin Gadimova

Georgia's Central Election Commission has announced the final results of the October 27 presidential elections in Georgia.

Ruling Georgian Dream coalition's candidate Giorgi Margvelashvili scored 1,012,569 votes or 62.12 percent of the total voter turnout.

The candidate for the United National Movement, Davit Bakradze, received 354,206 votes or 21.73 percent, while representative of the Democratic Movement Nino Burjanadze gained 165,933 votes or 10.18 percent.

In fourth place was the leader of the Labor Party Shalva Natelashvili (2.88 percent), in the fifth - the leader of the Christian Democrats Giorgi Targamadze (1.06 percent). The other candidates gained less than one percent of the vote.

Natelashvili did not agree with the decision of the CEC, and tried to disrupt the final session of the commission on November 12. The guard, however, did not let him enter the building. Natelashvili requested a recount in all election polls. He intends to appeal the decision of the CEC in court.

Natelashvili plans to attend the inauguration on November 17 and prevent the entry of Margvelashvili's into office.

The October 27 vote was the sixth presidential election after Georgia gained independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. Incumbent Mikheil Saakashvili could not run for re-election because of the two-term limit in the Constitution.

Upon the inauguration of a new president in 2013, a series of constitutional amendments passed in the parliament of Georgia from 2010 to 2013 will go into effect. The amendments envisage significant reduction of the president's powers in favor of the prime minister.
