Tbilisi welcomes EU-NATO condemnation of dividing line in conflict zone

The Georgian Foreign Ministry hailed the statements by NATO
Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and EU High Representative
for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton condemning
the construction of fences by Russian troops in the
Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone.
" Their statements clearly stress that this process is an
infringement of Georgia's territorial integrity and negatively
affects the humanitarian situation of the local population and
contradicts Russia's international obligations," the statement
reads.
Rasmussen urged the Russian government to reverse its decision on recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, a statement of the Head of the North Atlantic Alliance reads.
Rasmussen said that NATO's position on this issue is clear: the Alliance "supports territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders."
Catherine Ashton also expressed serious concern about the continuation and intensification of construction of fences along the administrative dividing line between the territory governed by Georgia's central government and Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions by Russian security forces and other structures.
