Georgian ex-speaker begins presidential campaign

Leader of the Democratic Movement of Georgia, former speaker of the Parliament Nino Burjanadze started her presidential election campaign, she said at a press conference in the office of her party on June 12.

According to Burjanadze, since the parliamentary elections in October 2012, the Democratic Movement has done a great job, and now is starting an active campaign. Burjanadze's campaign headquarters is expected to be headed by ex-Governor of Samtskhe-Javakheti region Gigla Baramidze. He will also head the Tbilisi organization of the party.

"His decision to engage in active politics and the struggle for a better future of the country deserves respect. It is honor for us that he has made a choice in favor of our party in view of the fact that we are consistently struggling, and will never put up with injustice," Burjanadze said, introducing Baramidze.

Besides Burjanadze, the candidates at the upcoming presidential elections are Giorgi Margvelashvili from Georgian Dream, Shalva Natelashvili from the Labour Party, Nestan Kirtadze from the Movement of Friendship between Georgians and Abkhazians, Georgians and Ossetians, ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs Saloyem Zurabishvili.

The presidential elections in Georgia are scheduled for the second half of 2013.
