Turkey wants to join EEU

By Gunay Hasanova

Turkish Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci announced about Turkey's desire to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), Day.Az reported with reference to Daily Sabah.

The Eurasian Economic Union is an international integration union created on the basis of the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space. It unites Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.

The EEU provides for free movement of goods, services, capital and labor, pursues coordinated, harmonized and single policy.

The Turkish minister stressed that however, Turkey doesn't want to harm the process of the accession to the EU.

Zeybekchi said that the cooperation with the EU will be expanded over the time.

He also pointed out that Turkey wants to complete the renewed Russian-Turkish negotiations started before the crisis with the downed Russian aircraft.

Turkey has long waited for its EU membership, while each application to accede to the European Union was frustrating for the government. Turkey, holding a status of an associate member at the Economic Community -- the predecessor of the EU since 1963 -- made an official application for entry on April 14, 1987.

The membership bid has become a major controversy of the ongoing enlargement of the European Union.
