Azerbaijani grandmasters join Abu Dhabi int’l festival

Azerbaijan`s grand master Gadir Huseynov and international master Ulvi Bajarani are competing in the 20th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival. The festival is organized by the Abu Dhabi Chess & Culture Club and Abu Dhabi Sport Council, AzerTag state news agency reported on July 2.

The Festival consists of the Master Tournament (for players rated above 2200 FIDE and Abu Dhabi players), Open Tournament (for U2200 players), Junior Tournament (for U15 players), and Blitz tournament.

Gadir Huseynov had a good start as he beat France`s Anda Safranska in the second round of the Young Grandmasters Tournament, rising his point to 1.5. Bajarani had lost to Russian GM Aleksandr Rakhmanov to remain with 1 point.

The Master Tournament has 48 participants from 18 countries competing. The Open Tournament is featuring 147 players from 21 federations.

Masters and Open are nine-round Swiss events, Junior is seven-round Swiss and Blitz is 11-round 3+2" Swiss.
