Azeri expert dismisses reports on UFOs
An Azerbaijani scholar has dismissed media reports saying unidentified flying objects have been detected in the capital Baku.
Local media have in past months circulated photos of alleged UFOs taken with amateur cameras in Baku, Ganja and Barda.
Elchin Babayev, deputy head of the Shamakhi astrophysics observatory, told the Baku-based Trend news agency, "Ordinary people and those who consider themselves ‘experts’ in this field are trying to mislead the public by their utterances about ‘flying objects’." He added that the people instead could have seen atmospheric phenomena or man-made devices in the air.
Babayev said that in order to research extraordinary atmospheric phenomena in Azerbaijan, local experts are cooperating with the International Astronomical Union.
"We have sent photos and coordinates of an odd cloud-related phenomenon which was observed in Azerbaijan’s territory to a commission of the Union. We have not yet received a reply," Babayev said.
