Ahmadinejad sees bright future for Azeri ties
High-level Iran-Azerbaijan relations cannot be affected by any factors, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said while hosting Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov, Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency reported.
He said scalable programs were being developed to further develop bilateral relations. "The future of relations between the two states and nations is bright."
Ahmadinejad noted that Iran has always supported the neighboring country’s development and security, adding that Tehran’s recent unilaterally canceling visa regulations with Azerbaijan was an indication of respect for the Azerbaijani people.
During the Iranian leader’s meeting with Speaker Asadov, the sides focused on a wide range of issues including economic, cultural and humanitarian aid cooperation, as well as the ongoing talks on settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict and regional developments, Azerbaijan’s state-run Azertag news agency reported.
Asadov said a pullout of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories was the primary factor that would contribute to sustainable peace and stability in the volatile region, noting that there were three options for resolving the long-standing dispute.
"The first option is enforcing the norms of international law owing to international organizations’ efforts. Another one is means of economic pressure, and regional states have vast potential in this respect. And finally, it is a solution of the problem by force."
The Azerbaijani parliament speaker also met with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki. Discussions centered on Iran-Azerbaijan relations, Iranian media reported.
Mottaki said bilateral relations are not aimed against any other countries, emphasizing that they have ancient history and vast potential for expansion. Asadov, in turn, pointed to the importance of capitalizing on existing opportunities to speed up their development.
In a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Larijani, the Milli Majlis chairman discussed bilateral and regional relations as well as inter-parliamentary ties. Larijani said solving regional issues was a key priority for his country’s foreign policy, adding that settling the Garabagh conflict was pivotal for the whole region.
Asadov also held a meeting with Saeed Jalili, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
On the same day, the parliamentary delegation led by the Azerbaijani speaker was in Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran, and then headed to the city of Tabriz densely populated by Azerbaijanis. During a meeting there with Alireza Ahmad Beigi, East Azerbaijan Province's governor, views were exchanged on ways of further developing Iran-Azerbaijan relations, in particular, opportunities for expanding economic, trade and cultural relations in borderline regions.
According to Beigi, the development of relations between the two countries in the fields of industry, transport, road construction and technology serves the interests of both countries.
The Azerbaijani delegation wrapped up its three-day visit to Iran on Monday.*
