Attempts by separatist regime’s representatives of Nagorno-Karabakh to present themselves as an independent state have once again failed.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to Uruguay Rashad Aslanov met with Acting Minister of Uruguay Foreign Affairs, Ariel Bergamino.

At the meeting, it became known that Uruguay does not recognize the separatist regime established in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The meeting was aimed at discussing a number of issues on the bilateral agenda. The particular purpose of the meeting was to clarify information circulated in the press about the arrival in Uruguay of a “representative” of the fictional regime created in the occupied Azerbaijani territories and to hold meetings here, including allegedly Uruguay officials.

Regarding the visit to Uruguay of the “Foreign Minister” of the separatist regime established in occupied Karabakh, the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry representative stressed that the Uruguayan government’s position is fundamental and unchanged.

It was stressed that Uruguay respects the supremacy of international law and the territorial integrity of states, and does not recognize the separatist regime in Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict should be resolved peacefully, and Uruguay supports OSCE Minsk Group’s efforts and the relevant UN Security Council resolution, they noted.

Aslanov also met with Senate Chairman Louise Topolansky. The chairman said she had met with the Armenian community of Uruguay during the event in parliament, not with the “representative” of the fictional structure in Karabakh.

She noted that following the meeting, the General Assembly (Parliament) of Uruguay made a press statement, where the General Assembly leadership and the Uruguay Senate once again stated that Uruguay reiterates its position on respect for the supremacy of international law.

“The country's parliament reiterates that it does not recognize the separatist regime in Nagorno-Karabakh, that the conflict must be resolved peacefully, and to this end, Uruguay supports the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions,” a statement said.

Earlier, the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Argentina presented a note of protest to the Uruguay Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the visit of "Foreign minister" of the illegal regime created in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, Masis Mayilyan, to Uruguay.

"At the invitation of the Armenian diaspora of Uruguay, Masis Mailyan visited the country where he participated in an event dedicated to the so-called "Armenian genocide", which was held in the Uruguay parliament with the participation of Senate President Louise Topolansky," Azerbaijani FM noted.

In this regard, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Argentina presented a note of protest from the Foreign Ministry of Uruguay.
