Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said that Iran stands for the implementation of further measures to introduce visa-free regime with Azerbaijan.

He mentioned that the canceling of the visa regime may be brought into force, given the character of relations between Baku and Tehran, mentioning that the process may be implemented gradually.

He said that the first step toward visa-free regime is the simplification of requirements for obtaining a visa, adding that the regime may be further applied in reference to special groups and then to others. He mentioned that the program is currently being held with Russia.

Some 18 flights are operated from Iran to Azerbaijan on a monthly basis, while the interest of Iranian tourists in the country is growing steadily.

Iran’s former ambassador to Azerbaijan earlier said that the number of flights from Iran to Azerbaijan should be increased, given the constantly growing interest of tourists in the country.

Azerbaijan issues 2 types of visas, including entry and transit visas to foreigners and stateless people. A single- entry visa allows only one entry-exit to the country within the period, while a multiple entry visa is valid for 2 years. This visa type allows a person to enter and exit the country several times within relevant period.

A period of staying in the country is limited by a validity period of a visa, which becomes invalid if it is not used during its validity period. Azerbaijani citizens currently have visa-free or visa on arrival access to some 62 countries and territories. Citizens of Iran can obtain a 15 days visa on arrival only for Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Iran and Azerbaijan have had diplomatic relations since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992.
