The Geography Institute of the ANAS has revealed new landslide areas in Baku, said Deputy Director of the Institution Elbrus Alizade.

“These days, we found more dangerous landslide areas, aside from those on the Greater Baku area of 2,200 square meters. We have revealed that the number of potentially risky zones is 7-8 times more than the known active zones in the capital,” he said.

Alizade noted that the most dangerous landslide areas are located in Garadag, Binagadi and Sabail districts of Baku.

The greatest activity is also registered in the areas along the slope in the direction of the monument "Eternal Flame" at the Alley of Martyrs.

The experts claim that the number of areas that are prone to landslides in Azerbaijan has increased by four times in the past 24 years.

The new potentially dangerous landslide zones are Lokbatan, Gurd Gapisi, Sulutepe, Sangachal and Alat.

“Rainfalls have intensified landslide processes in Baku. Currently, activity in landslide areas is observed in the territory of the Bail amphitheater, Zikh array, Brickworks in Guneshli and Masazir,” he said.

Earlier, Alizade claimed that rainfalls led to the activation of landslides along the Baku-Shamakhi-Agsu and Baku-Shamakhi-Muganli-Ismayilli roads.

“We recently reported on a landslide incident on the Baku-Agsu highway. This is an area with high probability of landslides. The landslide, which occurred in the area of "Sheredil" rest house is also located in this area. We warned about the risk, and the recent landslide once again proved it. The soil in this area is most susceptible to landslide processes,” he explained.

The deputy director added that the active landslide zones are spread throughout the country, particularly, in the south-eastern slope of the Greater Caucasus including Agsu, Shamakhi, Gobustan, Khizi, Siyazan and Shabran regions.
