BMX World Championships is important event in sporting life of Azerbaijan

Over 30 countries have appealed to participate in the BMX World Championships in 2018 so far and their number is growing.

Azerbaijan, will host the BMX World Championships, the world championships for bicycle motorcross, over the days of June 5-9.

The capital hosted the first meeting of the Organizing Committee of the BMX World Championships on December 13 to discuss the issues and give certain instructions.

Opening the meeting, First Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Organizing Committee Yagub Eyyubov stressed that the decision of the International Cycling Union (UCI) to hold the BMX World Championships in Baku is another victory of Azerbaijan’s sports policy and another high assessment given by international sports federations to all the work carried out in Azerbaijan, including the success achieved in the field of sports and physical education.

Eyyubov noted that the BMX World Championships will become another important event in the sporting life of Azerbaijan and stressed the importance of full and high-level implementation of the prepared plan of events so that guests who come to Azerbaijan leave the country with pleasant impressions.

He said that the creation of the extended Organizing Committee for decent holding of the BMX World Championships in Baku is another vivid example of attention and concern of the head of state for the development of cycling and sports in general.

In turn, Deputy Minister for Taxes, first Vice President of the Azerbaijan Cycling Federation Sahib Alakbarov, informed about the work done to prepare for the BMX World Championships.

BMX World Championships are the competitions for BMX (bicycle motorcross) racing held under the regulations of the International Cycling Union, the sport's international governing body.

The championships are held annually and the winner of each event is crowned the BMX Cycling World Champion. The UCI awards a gold medal and a rainbow jersey to the winner, who wears the jersey until the following year's championship.

Azerbaijan has already gained its international recognition as a sports country. Over the past few years, the country hosted 2015 First European Games, 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe, 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, several gymnastics championships and chess tournaments as well as a number of other sports events.
