Kazakhstan has high transport capacity - minister

Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Serik Akhmetov launched the construction of the Astana-Temirtau motorway running to a length of 178 kilometres, within the framework of the development of the Centre-South highway route.

"This road will connect the capital with the Karaganda industrial region and is of great importance for the economy of the country. All our roads will be built using the latest technology and have the European quality standard," Akhmetov said during the ceremony of launching the construction.

According to him, Kazakhstan has a high transport capacity.

"This year the construction and repair of 2000 kilometres of our roads are provided. For instance, the Astana-Kostanay-Chelyabinsk is an international corridor which will be completed this year. About 800 kilometres of the highway will be commissioned as part of a larger Western Europe-Western China project," Akhmetov said.

Also, he said, in accordance with the instructions of the President of Kazakhstan, the construction of new roads such as Astana-Pavlodar, Astana-Ust-Kamenogorsk and others connecting the capital with the regions will start in 2013.

"These are large projects that will generally create a large network of roads," Akhmetov said.

The length of the Astana-Temirtau motorway with four-lanes is 178 kilometres. The thickness of the concrete is 27 centimetres and construction is scheduled for completion in 2016.
