Ali Hasanov says no political motive in journalist’s arrest

Contributor to Radio Azadlyg Khadija Ismayilova has been arrested by a judgment on suspicion in concrete criminal action’, said Ali Hasanov, Head of the Public and Political Affairs Department at the Azerbaijani President`s Administration, AzerTag state news agency reported.

“Statement of the Republican Prosecutor General’s Office excludes any political motive in her arrest. The statements of some local and foreign circles, organizations are therefore biased, groundless and appear to be a process directed from the same center. These politicized statements seem to be also a pressure on the law-enforcement bodies to fairly conduct objective investigation on the said case according to the Azerbaijani legislature,” he said.

Baku City Sabail District Court issued a decision on December 5 to arrest the Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova.

Earlier, Khadija Ismayilova was summoned to Baku City Prosecutor's Office. She was interrogated on the fact of suicide attempt of the former employee of Radio Azadliq and Meydan TV, Tural Mustafayev.

Hasanov said in Azerbaijan, being a legal, democratic state, all the freedoms, including the freedom of word and information, the rights for everybody to express freely have been fully ensured. “In Azerbaijan, so far no journalist has been arrested for his activity within the existing laws for his political views, his thoughts and will not be arrested,” he said.
